TTS - new blog post about stuff!

here's what's up with That's the Spirit lately!

My tune 'Head for the Hills' was featured on Degrassi: The Next Generation just after Xgiving in Oct, which I'm really excited about.  Degrassi airs in 130 countries which means a few million folks will have their TVs turned up to 11 listening to my song playing in the background, right! right?

been doing lots of fun interviews this past month or so - check out this one and this one too .  and 'staying places' is making its slow way thru the united states as we speak, on my very limited budget, but with a very lovely reaction thus far from nebraska to california to nyc.  slowly it will make its way to you.  i hope to get down there soon too.

also, my new new record is really coming along, with help from lots of important and charming and fascinating people.  3 songs have been recorded and are ready for mixing, and of course i have many more coming.  it will be a strange one, very very different.  you may not recognize it as me at first, but it is/will be!  it has a very definitive stamp on it and i'm so insanely excited about it i can barely contain it, which is why i'm writing to you now with no real 'news'...

right, so off i go.  playing tonight with one of my many other projects, orienteers, in montreal at quai de brumes for the festival le phoque - come out if yr in town!

NEWS: Antique Room to reissue 1st That's the Spirit E.P.

June 2, 2009: Ottawa's That's the Spirit, a.k.a. space-folk singer/songwriter Ben Wilson, will re-release his first "ultra-lo-fi" E.P. I Like His Older Stuff, as a free digital download on his Antique Room label on Tuesday, June 16th.

Older Stuff was recorded in 2001 using two ghetto blasters, a broken Radio Shack mic, a cracked classical guitar and an old delay pedal that caught fire during one of the recording sessions. Though originally not properly released -- and miles away from the sonic quality of TTS' most recent release, 2008's acclaimed Staying Places -- Older Stuff stands apart as a unique, mysterious and compelling recording even through all the tape hiss, distortion and compression. On the morning of the 16th, the EP will be downloadable free of charge, in high-quality mp3 format for folks to hear for themselves, on antiqueroom.ca.

All of this is timed to coincide with an exciting month for That's the Spirit. Having just been chosen by Apostle of Hustle to open their recent Ottawa show, the band will travel to North By Northeast (NXNE) festival in Toronto on June 18 (@ C'est What w./ Angela Desveaux), then to the Sled Island Festival in Calgary on June 24 (@ Vern's w./ Superfantastics, Colourbook and more).

I Like His Older Stuff track listing:

1. caroline
2. tricky moves
3. fourteen days
4. slow in going by
5. caterpillian
6. not pretend
7. caroline part 2

Orienteers FREE debut LP drops digitally March 20!

(photo: Wojciech Jakobiec - www.wojciechjakobiec.ca)

Antique Room is thrilled to announce that Ottawa instrumentalists Orienteers will release their debut, self-titled LP for FREE on Antique Room, on the first day of spring, Friday, March 20, 2009! The duo, consisting of multi-instrumentalists Tom Thompson and Ben Wilson, concoct dizzying mixtures of pedal steel guitar loops, 'found sounds' from Paris, spaced-out organs and vibes that aim to hypnotize and inspire rather than shock and overwhelm.  Their exciting debut will be fully-downloadable in high-quality mp3 format at antiqueroom.ca on the morning of the 20th.  Happy spring folks!
